In August, the State Legislature will vote on the California Universal Healthcare Act, SB 840. Come to a discussion with Assembly Member (and Senator-to-be) Mark Leno and Assembly Member Fiona Ma on the importance of supporting a health care system without the private insurance industry. Although Leno and Ma are strong supporters of SB 840, it's important to show them the active support it enjoys in our community.
Location: Mission Cultural Center, 2866 Mission St., SF (at 25th).
Sponsored by Single Payer Now, California Alliance of Retired Americans, Gray Panthers, Senior Action Network, and the California Universal Health Care Education Project.

Greetings from your new Meetup & Memberships Coordinator, Peter Wong.
Do you want to start unifying your friends and allies to tackle some of the big challenges in the November elections now? This upcoming Meetup offers as starting points the race for the White House, the Democratic Party platform, and the fight against California's anti-marriage equality initiative.
First up is our Clinton-Obama unity panel. High-profile Clinton and Obama advocates will lead a discussion on Clinton supporters' understandable disappointment of not having their preferred candidate, rancor between supporters of the two campaigns, and the need to marshal supporters from both campaigns to break further Republican control of the White House. Speaking will tentatively be Rebecca Prozan, Susan Pfeiffer, Debra Walker, and Laura Spanjian.
For people ready to plug into the Obama campaign, Susan and Obama activist Anhoni Patel will talk about Obama support groups attendees can join.
Following that, you'll have a chance to offer your input on the Democratic Party national platform. We'll have a brainstorming session for possible planks that the platform should include.
Finally, we'll have a representative from the No On 8 campaign. He'll talk about how attendees can get involved in the effort to protect gay marriage in California. The latest Field Poll may show the anti-gay marriage initiative losing, but the stakes are too high to rest on our laurels.

Has America’s “War on Terror” turned into a war on American ideals and its international standing? Since the early development of the United States’ pursuit of international terrorists, many have argued that the US has suffered incalculable losses in terms of the country’s moral and political standing in the world. Moreover, many of the government’s decisions and actions have come into question for violating the Constitution and American values, as well as for hampering the pursuit of Al Qaeda. In The Dark Side, Jane Mayer recounts how America has fought the “War on Terror” and explores its implications for our security and freedom. In recent years, she has written extensive articles for The New Yorker on the bin Laden family and the government’s controversial policy of extraordinary rendition.
