Are the US government's efforts to "spread democracy" actually attempts to crush democracies Washington doesn't like? Veteran British documentarian John Pilger visits several Latin American democracies and finds a flowering of popular democracy that offers lessons to the US. This film also offers an extensive interview with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, which will give American viewers a chance to form a media spin-free opinion of the controversial Latin American leader.

San Francisco for Democracy Meetup
Schroeders German restaurant
240 Front St. (between California & Sacramento)
We've all wondered: Why won't our supposedly progressive elected officials act on their values? Why won't they stand up for gay marriage, universal healthcare, economic justice, raising taxes, impeaching Bush and Cheney, and defunding the War in Iraq? And what can we do to hold them accountable?
We'll discuss practical things you can do to stiffen our elected officials' spines with a panel of experienced and effective activists, including:
* Rae Abileah and Janet Weil, National Grassroots Coordinators, CODEPINK Women for Peace
* Will Easton, Activism Manager, CREDO Action
* Barry Hermanson, local activist for economic and social justice
Also: A report from our own Greg Keaton on the 2008 Annual General Meeting of Amnesty International.
