February SF4D Meetup: Marijuana Legalization, Progressive Immigration Reform &

Description: At last we can now give you a better idea of what to expect at this month's Meetup.

Legalizing marijuana usage in California is aimed at making a much-maligned medicine available to more people and providing a source of new state revenue among other things. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano has worked at the state legislative level to make this goal a reality. Speaking on the assemblyman's current efforts on this and other issues will be Assemblyman Ammiano aide Quintin Mecke.

San Francisco has unfortunately become notorious as a hub for human trafficking. Supervisor Carmen Chu and District Attorney Kamala Harris have been leading a monthlong effort to bring attention to the problem. Emily Murase of the S.F. Department of the Status of Women will talk about the project and what you can do to help out. State Senator Leland Yee will talk about efforts at the state legislative level to combat human trafficking.

A stealth initiative to effectively eliminate the possibility of California communities moving to lower-cost public power is heading for the 2010 ballot box. Secretly sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the measure would require a 2/3 public vote before any community public power plan could truly move forward. Those who've seen Proposition 13 in action and the annual California state budget gridlock can tell you how well requiring a 2/3 vote works out in practice. Speaking on what you can do to fight this measure will be Mark Toney, Executive Director of Towards Utility Rate Normalization.

Is there a better way to brainstorm immigration reform outside of extremist right-wing views? What would progressive immigration reform look like? Can families currently split by America's immigration laws be reunited? How can immigrant workers be incorporated into American society without being exploited as cheap labor? SFILEN's Eric Quezada, immigration attorney Tatiana Perez, and Out 4 Immigration's Amos Lim will offer some fresh thinking on immigration reform.

We've got a full program on some major issues. Hope you'll join us!
